Reindustrialization and gigafactories
Reindustrialization and gigafactories
Towards reindustrialization... and beyond!
In its 6th assessment report published on March 20, 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) sounds the alarm: global warming is expected to reach 1.5°C by the early 2030s.
To avoid a further rise, synonymous with extreme climatic hazards, it is no longer necessary to point out that it is imperative to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. An energy transition in which the mobility sector has an important role to play. In fact, Europe has taken up the issue, imposing the end of combustion-powered vehicles from 2035.
In France, the government has announced its ambition to produce 2 million electric vehicles by 2030, in line with its desire to accelerate the country's re-industrialization. Given that French industry accounted for just 11.5% of GDP in the 2000s, this promises to be a major challenge.
Industry represents one of the levers for creating sustainable economic growth, and retaining our sovereignty in this area. The electric car could well become one of the engines of reindustrialization, with the widespread use of lithium-ion batteries.
On one condition: boost production of these batteries, which account for 30 to 40% of the price of an electric vehicle. Until now, Asia has been the almost exclusive producer, supplying 95% of the European market.
To gain greater autonomy and help achieve the carbon neutrality target set for 2050, Europe wants to foster the emergence of a new industry by supporting the creation of a battery "Airbus". For its part, France has embarked on the creation of a "Battery Valley" in the Hauts-de-France region. It will host mega factories, or gigafactories, whose surface area will equal...20 soccer pitches at the very least.
Equans stands alongside these players in this movement of reindustri- alization and environmental transition. The company is already supporting manufacturers in the design and implementation of these battery factory projects, serving three ambitions: industrial, energy and digital.
Unique expertise
Thanks to its unique expertise in the design, installation, maintenance and operation of multi-technical facilities, as well as strong specific expertise in the European gigafactory market, Equans is today the only design-build company capable of handling all the technical packages of a mega plant or GigaFab.
For over twenty-five years, Equans France has been designing and implementing clean and anhydrous rooms, which are distinguished by their very high level of complexity and the high level of technical mastery they require.
Equans supports customers as diverse as Asian companies looking to establish themselves in Europe, start-ups attracted by the innovation associated with this growing market, and incumbent niche battery players expanding their activities into the electric vehicle market.
A dynamic of location that contributes to the movement of reindustrialization and environmental transition.

BRIEF HISTORY OF A GREAT GROUP

EQUANS FRANCE'S OFFER PALETTE
From financing to performance contracts, including design, construction, maintenance and operation, Equans France offers seven key areas of expertise:
And tomorrow?
If Equans is to give full rein to its expertise, resources and means, its teams of experts need to be involved as early as possible in gigafactory projects. Taking a global view would contribute to finalizing a project optimized from every point of view. The company is also keen to deploy its skills in other industries, such as hydrogen and novel foods.
To achieve its current and future ambitions, Equans is looking to attract new talent. People interested in carrying out highly technical projects of all sizes, both in France and internationally: design engineers, project management, planning, contract management, site supervisors, purchasing, cost control, quality and QHSE managers are just some of the profiles we are looking to recruit.
For Bilel Kaabeche, "gigafactory projects open up new career paths, so we're interested in responsible, professional people who want to experience an adventure that's only just beginning." The new recruits would have the opportunity to see the projects they conceive come to fruition within a very short timeframe.
So, a warning to those who might be attracted by the idea of contributing to the new era that is taking shape: two years working on a gigafactory is equivalent to gaining five to six years' experience in another industry. It's a real career gas pedal in a world that's yet to be fully discovered and explored.
