Towards reindustrialization... and beyond!
In its 6th assessment report published on March 20, 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) sounds the alarm: global warming is expected to reach 1.5°C by the early 2030s.
To avoid a further rise, synonymous with extreme climatic hazards, it is no longer necessary to point out that it is imperative to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. An energy transition in which the mobility sector has an important role to play. In fact, Europe has taken up the issue, imposing the end of combustion-powered vehicles from 2035.
In France, the government has announced its ambition to produce 2 million electric vehicles by 2030, in line with its desire to accelerate the country's re-industrialization. Given that French industry accounted for just 11.5% of GDP in the 2000s, this promises to be a major challenge.
Industry represents one of the levers for creating sustainable economic growth, and retaining our sovereignty in this area. The electric car could well become one of the engines of reindustrialization, with the widespread use of lithium-ion batteries.
On one condition: boost production of these batteries, which account for 30 to 40% of the price of an electric vehicle. Until now, Asia has been the almost exclusive producer, supplying 95% of the European market.
To gain greater autonomy and help achieve the carbon neutrality target set for 2050, Europe wants to foster the emergence of a new industry by supporting the creation of a battery "Airbus". For its part, France has embarked on the creation of a "Battery Valley" in the Hauts-de-France region. It will host mega factories, or gigafactories, whose surface area will equal...20 soccer pitches at the very least.
