Healthcare now accounts for 8.7% of the national GDP, with 333 billion in current expenditures—an economic reality that speaks to something fundamental: healthcare is not just another sector.
It is a critical sector where nothing can wait, stop, or go wrong. It is this reality that has guided Equans France’s commitment to healthcare providers for years. Not merely as a technical service provider, but as a performance partner—convinced that the reliability of a ventilation system, the continuity of a power supply, or the quality of air treatment in an operating room are direct prerequisites for the safety of patients and healthcare providers. The French hospital system is under pressure.
Its housing stock is aging: the rate of dilapidation exceeded 58% in 2023 (DREES). Healthcare needs are increasing—driven by an aging population and a rise in chronic diseases.
At the same time, healthcare facilities must reduce their carbon footprint, control their operating costs, and adapt their infrastructure to climate change. These challenges cannot be addressed in isolation.
That is why Equans France has developed a solution that simultaneously addresses the three key challenges shaping today’s hospital transformation: building performance, smart usage, and industrial sovereignty in healthcare. This press kit explores these three dimensions through the projects we are carrying out in partnership with French healthcare institutions. First and foremost is the hospital building itself—the true foundation of quality care and sustained performance: air quality, thermal control, energy efficiency, geothermal energy, and safety.
From the university hospitals in Nantes and Nice to hospitals operating on a shared-site basis, such as Argenteuil, our teams work right at the heart of these facilities without ever disrupting patient care. Then there’s the integration of digital technology as a driver of transformation: building management systems, cybersecurity, real-time monitoring systems, patient care pathways, and healthcare workers’ working conditions.

Finally, the pharmaceutical industry, a truly indispensable link in the healthcare chain. In a country where 39% of French people reported facing a drug shortage between 2022 and 2024, the ability to produce essential treatments in France has become a matter of national sovereignty. Pierre Guérin, our division specializing in bioproduction equipment, with its development and manufacturing site in Niort, contributes directly to this effort.
