FAQ: Everything You Need to Know About Industrial and Commercial Refrigeration
What is industrial refrigeration?
Industrial refrigeration refers to all refrigeration technologies and systems designed to meet high-capacity needs in large-scale production or storage environments. Industrial refrigeration is characterized by complex, often automated systems capable of maintaining precise and stable temperatures despite intensive use.
These solutions are essential in a variety of industries, such as food processing (deep-freezing, cooling of production lines), chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and refrigerated logistics. They frequently use high-tech refrigeration units that operate with natural refrigerants such as ammonia (NH₃) or CO₂, enabling the management of complex processes and large storage volumes.
What is the difference between industrial refrigeration and commercial refrigeration?
The difference between commercial refrigeration and industrial refrigeration lies primarily in the capacity of the systems, the technologies used, and the end uses.
-
Commercial refrigeration is designed for retail outlets and distribution (supermarkets, neighborhood stores, restaurants). It involves equipment of moderate capacity, such as refrigerated display cases, frozen food cases, and cold storage rooms. The goal is to preserve products while displaying them to customers, with frequent door openings.
Industrial refrigeration is used in manufacturing facilities and large logistics centers. Industrial refrigeration systems are designed for very high thermal loads and specific processes (mold cooling, crystallization, high-bay warehouses). Here, the reliability and availability of the equipment are essential for 24/7 operation of the production line.
Why Should You Hire an Energy-Efficient Refrigeration Specialist for Your Business?
Hiring a refrigeration and energy specialist is crucial to ensuring the long-term reliability of your production equipment. An expert like Axima Réfrigération France doesn’t just handle installation; they provide expert advice to help you choose the right technology based on your specific needs.
An improperly sized system can result in significant costs due to excessive energy consumption or, more seriously, breaks in the cold chain.
In addition, Axima Réfrigération provides rigorous preventive maintenance, which is essential for extending the equipment’s service life and avoiding production downtime.
What are the regulations on refrigerants in the European Union?
The F-Gas Regulation aims to reduce emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases by limiting the use of certain refrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP) and promoting less polluting alternatives. Refrigerants such as R-404A, R-410A, and other hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are being phased out and/or subject to limited quotas.
Effective March 11, 2024, the new European Regulation No. 2024/573 (F-Gas III) tightens the measures of previous versions of the F-Gas Regulation and accelerates the transition timeline.
Retrofitting or replacing older refrigeration systems with solutions using natural refrigerants has become a priority. At Axima Réfrigération, we incorporate these regulatory compliance requirements from the design phase onward, prioritizing refrigerants with low GWP (Global Warming Potential) to safeguard your investments against future legal restrictions.
How can you optimize the energy efficiency of your refrigeration units?
Optimizing the energy efficiency of refrigeration systems depends both on selecting high-performance equipment and on sustainable energy consumption management.
Axima Réfrigération supports you in the design and optimization of your systems through energy-efficient solutions:
-
HP / floating high/low-pressure control for optimized operation based on actual conditions,
-
Variable-speed drives on the compressors to finely adjust power to the load,
-
High-efficiency permanent magnet motor compressors,
-
High-performance oil-free chillers,
-
Heat recovery for hot water production or space heating,
-
Predictive energy management (PEPS) to adjust your systems’ control setpoints in real time,
-
Monitoring and building automation systems that enable continuous tracking of energy consumption and rapid detection of deviations.
Beyond technical solutions, we partner with you to achieve measurable energy reduction goals through Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs) or Energy Maintenance Contracts (EMCs), ensuring that the energy savings achieved are sustained over time.
