Equans restores Montreal’s oldest tramway with a custom-made solution that guarantees its legacy
Retired in 1959, Montreal's last active tram line, the Canadian Railway Museum's Exporail electric tramway is now running again. A key attraction, it offers visitors to the Canadian Railway Museum a journey back in time with a one-kilometre ride on a vintage tram. The restoration was entrusted to Equans, via its subsidiary Equans Transport Canada. Through this contract, Equans, also in charge of electrification for the Réseau Express Métropolitain, Montreal’s new metro line, hence reaffirms its expertise but this time at the service of Montreal's rail heritage.
An emblematic re-electrification project
Exporail, the Canadian Railway Museum was founded in 1961 by the Canadian Railroad Historical Association (CRHA) and is home to one of the world's largest rail collections. The museum collects and displays vehicles and artefacts that retrace the great history of Canadian railways. Among these exhibits is a novel attraction in Quebec: Exporail's 1959 MTC tramway line. Every year, 80,000 visitors enjoy a one-kilometre ride around the museum's outdoor site.
