Toward Sustainable Mobility
Toward Sustainable Mobility
With a population of 7.2 million, the Greater Paris Metropolis is a dense, urban intermunicipal community that includes the city of Paris, 123 municipalities in the three departments of Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, and Val-de-Marne, as well as 7 municipalities in Essonne and Val-d’Oise. As Europe’s leading employment hub and largest office space market, it is a major driver of global growth.
The Greater Paris Metropolis is proving itself every day as the driving force and unifying element behind numerous metropolitan initiatives.
Among the most emblematic of these are the acceleration of energy transition efforts, the improvement of air quality through incentives to replace polluting vehicles, the development of bike lanes, the establishment of an electric vehicle charging network, and the three editions of “Inventons la Métropole du Grand Paris,” which aim to create innovative urban projects.
Across all these areas, Equans France, through its subsidiaries, supports the various stakeholders driving this change by promoting the growth of more sustainable mobility, particularly through the adoption of intelligent transportation systems and the creation of next-generation communication networks.
Ineo Systrans, a subsidiary of Equans France, designs and develops a suite of solutions that includes smart transportation equipment, software, and services.
As an expert in Operations Support and Passenger Information Systems (SAEIV), the NAVINEO solution aims to optimize the operation of public transit networks in order to enhance the appeal and performance of sustainable transportation.
Through operational efficiency, safety, the passenger experience, and data analytics, Ineo Systrans implements complex systems, thereby contributing to efficient mobility and improving the quality of life for users.
SAEIV was specifically designed for transportation operators with the goal of ensuring and improving the monitoring of vehicle fleets and drivers.
Thanks to its real-time information relay and geolocation capabilities, it facilitates operational management—whether it involves assigning vehicles and drivers, real-time monitoring of service delivery, or even managing unforeseen events along a route.
This system also enhancesthe passenger experience by providing reliable real-time information, whether passengers are on board, at a stop, or using their phones. This information is disseminated through various media: display screens and audio announcements in vehicles and at stations, as well as through web applications provided by the transit system operator.
Building the Future of Travel
In a study conducted by Equans France to understand the expectations and habits of public transit riders, several key findings emerged.
The survey results highlighted users’ high expectations regarding efficiency (punctuality, fewer delays) and comfort (less crowding, cleanliness, more pleasant trips) in public transportation.
In fact, the majority of respondents cited efficiency as a priority (67%), while nearly half mentioned comfort (49%). As for respondents who do not use public transit, they explained their choice by stating that they would be more inclined to use public transit if it were more comfortable, faster, more direct, geographically more extensive, and, above all, less expensive.
In conclusion, future expectations center on more comfortable, innovative, eco-friendly, and safe mobility. Equans offers solutions to meet these needs through operational support systems, electric vehicles, and innovations designed to improve the flow, safety, and efficiency of transportation.
The modernization of SAEIV onboard equipment in buses throughout the Greater Paris metropolitan area (the Île-de-France bus networks comprise more than 10,000 vehicles) now makes it possible to implement new features that improve operations (quality of service, performance, costs) of the vehicles (more precise location tracking, passenger counting, more comprehensive data reporting, remote software updates, enhanced driver console, etc.), as well as passenger information (new onboard screens for improved service quality).
This large-scale project is part of the Île-de-France Mobilités plan to open the market to competition by 2026. The modernization of the SAEIV systems will facilitate the transition of buses to the networks of the new operators.
A modernized bus can be put into service by its future operator with minimal adaptation of the NAVINEO SAEIV hardware and software.
This capability offers a significant economic advantage for the region, which bears the transition costs associated with opening the historic network to competition.
Low-carbon mobility
The city continues to place a high priority on carbon-free mobility projects, as evidenced by the 100% electric bus line, Tzen 4, in Essonne, one of the most innovative routes.
It uses an electric BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) vehicle, incorporating, among other features, the latest version of the SAEIV NAVINEO solution and a passenger information system from a partner company. The 30 vehicles on the future line will be able to carry up to 140 passengers, compared to 100 for the buses currently in service.
As for the trams operating in the metropolitan area, approximately 250 of them have been equipped with NAVINEO solutions on lines T2, T3, T5, T6, T7, T8, and T9. As for tram-trains, Equans France teams have installed these solutions on 80 trains on lines T4, T11, T12, and T13.
Today, in the Greater Paris metropolitan area, more than 11 tram/ tram-trains and more than 10,000 buses (more than 40% of which run on clean energy) are equipped with NAVINEO hardware or solutions, demonstrating the expertise of the Equans teams and their contribution to the transform/pof tomorrow’s urban mobility.
“ Thanks to our NAVINEO Operations Support and Passenger Information System, our customers in the Paris Metropolitan Area have seen an increase in ridership on buses and trams. By equipping a large fleet, NAVINEO optimizes network management, making services run more smoothly and improving the user experience, while also making public transportation more appealing. We are proud to contribute to making mobility more sustainable, accessible, and efficient. ”
Ultra-High-Speed Broadband Network, one of Europe's largest and most complex communication networks for video streaming
In 2014, Equans, through its subsidiaries Ineo UTS, Ineo Infracom, and Ineo Tinea, partnered with Nokia and the RATP on the project Ultra-High-Speed Broadband Network (RTHD).
Capable of supporting all of RATP’s services—from surveillance cameras to telephony, a TETRA system (a professional mobile radio communication system used primarily for secure and critical communications), and the data service of the new VMS (Video Managethodment System, for managing video surveillance applications)—the RTHD network consists of more than 2,000 switches and routers, deployed across more than 500 RATP sites in Île-de-WetFrance.
Metro stations, bus depots, commercial buildings, RER stations, maintenance workshops, and even command centers responsible for traffic control or security: all now benefit from this next-generation technology, which significantly improves the performance of communications and the system as a whole.
This enables the transmission of voice, data, and video streams—including the most critical ones—with extremely high requirements for real-time performance, throughput, and availability, thereby enhancing both diagnostic capabilitiesand responsiveness in the event of an alert.
After handling the design, installation, and integration of the video infrastructure and software for the entire network, Equans ensured the operational maintenance of the system and the video infrastructure.
Today, RATP security personnel have access to more than 13,000 cameras, which can be viewed in real time and continuously via a secure, redundant network.

Tram & TER: A Growth Trend That Needs Support
Rail projects—whether trams, regional express trains (TER), or other infrastructure—play a central role in this transition toward more sustainable mobility. Bouygues Energies & Services has launched ambitious initiatives aimed at strengthening public transportation services while promoting sustainable, environmentally friendly mobility that meets the growing needs of users.
For example, Bouygues Energies & Services Urban and Road Transport, a division of Equans France, is involved in several transportation projects within the MGP area, notably the T9 line for the Traction, Centralized Technical Management (GTC), and Audio-Video Telecommunications (TAV), as well as the T4, T12, and T13 tram lines for the High-Voltage and Low-Voltage (HTBT) and Traction lots. The Centralized Technical Management (GTC) system enables the monitoring and control of CFa equipment (including video, sound systems, intercoms, traction energy management, etc.).
Work on the T9 Paris–Orly-Ville line and its maintenance and storage facility focused in particular on the implementation of multi-service network systems, centralized technical management, telephony, intercom, timing, operational video surveillance, and public address systems.
Bouygues Energies & Service Infrastructures Extérieures, a division of Equans France, has worked on several transportation projects in the Greater Paris metropolitan area, such as the Tzen 4, the T9 and T12 tram lines, involving the partial installation of traffic signal systems (SLT).
This equipment plays a key role in regulating traffic flow, managing intersections, coordinating traffic around areas served by these tram lines, and ensuring safe travel in urban areas. Unlike previous projects, Bouygues Energies & Services carried out the complete installation of street lighting and traffic signal systems for the recently commissioned T10 line.
Street lighting plays a vital role in user safety, particularly in pedestrian zones or areas with heavy traffic. Finally, Bouygues Energies & Services partially installed temporary street lighting along the T7 tram line, ensuring safety and visibility in the affected areas until the final work is completed.
Eole: A Closer Look at an Ambitious Project!
The Eole project, one of the largest construction projects in the Greater Paris area, aims to extend the RER Line E by 55 km to the west, connecting Haussmann Saint-Lazare to Mantes-la-Jolie. This complex project involves the construction of three new stations: Porte Maillot, La Défense, and Nanterre.
This is where Bouygues Energies & Services Ferroviaire, a division of Equans France, comes in, working on behalf of SNCF Réseau. The company plays a key role in the installation and management of technical infrastructure.
It is involved in installing the signaling systems needed to regulate train traffic on the new section of Line E, setting up video surveillance in the stations, and carrying out civil engineering work to integrate new infrastructure such as tunnels and stations: work that is crucial for adapting existing networks and building new extensions.
Bouygues Energies & Services also installs communication systems that enable real-time information management between trains and control centers, thereby facilitating the supervision and coordination of rail operations. The company is also responsible for supplying and managing electrical power for the EOLE project.
This includes installing power supply systems for trains and rail infrastructure, as well as optimizing energy distribution to ensure the network’s reliability and sustainability.
This work ensures the reliability, energy efficiency, and sustainability of the future Eole network’s facilities.
