The medical device sector in France remains primarily composed of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs—93%) and generates jobs (nearly 90,000 direct jobs) nationwide. The number of companies has shown a positive trend since 2017, with more than 200 new companies established. Companies in the sector are located throughout the country, although more than 50% are concentrated in the Île-de-France and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions.

The main driver of growth is the strong internationalization of companies, with the majority seeking to expand into the U.S., European, and Asian markets. The new European regulation and its impact on business operations (the need to hire staff to ensure product compliance), as well as difficulties in accessing the French market, are the current obstacles to business development in France.

Sartorius: From full-service support to cleanroom design

In 2017, EQUANS France began a collaboration with the Sartorius Group, a leading partner in the biopharmaceutical industry. As a leader in the production of sterile and flexible solutions for the medical sector, the Group called on the expert teams at EQUANS France for a project involving the renovation of large-scale warehouses and the creation of cleanrooms. We provided design services and handled all trades (general contracting, structural work, cleanroom design, HVAC, air conditioning systems, fire safety, high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems) at the Aubagne complex sites.

Now more than ever, for this manufacturer known for its precision-measured products, the Group has proven to be a strategic partner, enabling the company to stand out from its competitors in the manufacture of custom-made sterile bags capable of holding volumes ranging from a few cubic centiliters to thousands of cubic liters of liquids and stem cells.

To support its growth and meet the market’s significant demands, in late 2021, EQUANS France signed an agreement to build a new production facility. Our mission involves the turnkey construction of the building and the creation of cleanrooms covering an area of approximately 4,000 m². For Sartorius, this is a critical challenge, as the cleanrooms must accommodate a high volume of people despite being a controlled environment where movement is typically restricted. EQUANS France has therefore developed a specialized ventilation system to manage the airflow in these cleanrooms, which have specific environmental and operational requirements.
