Decarbonization of Maritime Transport
Decarbonization of Maritime Transport
Decarbonizing Maritime Transport: How Can We Balance Energy Efficiency with Economic Performance?
While maritime transport accounts for about 3% of global CO2 emissions and could account for 17% by 2050 (according to a European Parliament study), numerous projects are emerging to decarbonize this mode of transport. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) equipment and refrigeration systems are the 1st source of energy consumption on land and the 2nd at sea, after ship propulsion.
AXIMA Marine, a subsidiary of the Equans Group, serves the naval, civil, and military sectors. It designs, builds, and maintains HVAC and refrigeration solutions that play a key role in the decarbonization of maritime transport. As a specialist in HVAC and refrigeration, as well as fire safety for all types of ships, AXIMA Marine brings over 140 years of experience in the field.
Thanks to its leading position, the AXIMA Marine teams support major shipbuilding companies in their international projects and also have offices located around the world. These teams, passionate about the maritime world and aware of the critical challenges surrounding global warming, are deeply committed to developing new technologies and products that are more environmentally friendly.
How can we decarbonize maritime transport?
Speed
Limiting the speed of older ships (33% of the fleet). Slow steaming: A 12% reduction in average speed results in a 27% decrease in daily fuel consumption and, consequently, lower GHG emissions.
Alternative Fuel
Switch to a more environmentally friendly alternative fuel (LNG - Hydrogen).
Optimizing Ships
Dock connections; flue gas filtration systems (“scrubbers”) or wastewater treatment systems; smart control systems; waste heat recovery.
Clean Propulsion
Shifting to "clean" propulsion methods
Pioneering Sustainable, Low-Carbon Maritime Transport
Starting with the design phase known as “Eco-design,” AXIMA Marine offers its customers equipment and services that combine energy-efficient design, technical feasibility, and customer needs. From eco-design to energy efficiency audits, to the design and operation of low-carbon HVAC and refrigeration solutions for ships, AXIMA Marine possesses a wide range of expertise that gives it strong credibility.
Its teams of refrigeration experts develop refrigeration solutions using natural, carbon-free refrigerants. In addition, our innovative testing facilities, including a climate test bench, enable our teams to test and certify all of our developments.
