The "Cathedrals of the Rails" in Saint-Denis Are Taking Shape: Between History and Modernity, a New Neighborhood Is Emerging
On Thursday, September 14, Katayoune PANAHI, Director of SNCF IMMOBILIER; Mathieu HANOTIN, President of the Plaine Commune Territorial Public Institution and Mayor of Saint-Denis; in the presence of Étienne PASSANI, Managing Director of Île-de-France Eiffage Immobilier et Aménagement; Marc DAUMAS, Managing Director of Aire Nouvelle, a subsidiary of Equans, and David BENHAMOU, representing Maquis-Art and l’Aérosol, announced the official launch of the urban transformation project for the “Cathédrales du rail” in Saint-Denis.
Located on a 5.5-hectare plot between the northern rail corridor and Avenue du Président Wilson in Saint-Denis, the “Cathédrales du rail” area corresponds to the former SNCF repair shops in La Plaine, which are now decommissioned. It owes its name to the presence of two former railway sheds that are part of Saint-Denis’s industrial heritage and have been listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since 2004.
