Utility Line Burial Projects and Women's Firefighter Helmets
Listen to Jodie Joly, site manager at Equans France
What is the role of a team leader?
The role of a forewoman involves supervising the men and women on the job site, overseeing the installation of utility lines and backfilling, and managing the supply of materials needed to complete the project. We handle the burial of underground utility lines, which includes low-voltage power, telephone lines, and street lighting. We’ve been here for a few months now, and we still have one to two weeks left on this project.
Ever since you were a teenager, you’ve wanted to work in a traditionally male-dominated field: public works. How did you become interested in this profession?
It was while watching a construction site during a walk with my father that I realized this profession wasn’t very female-dominated. Today, I operate mini dump trucks and excavators. What I enjoy most is taking the initiative, laying utility lines, and operating heavy equipment—in fact, I enjoy every aspect of the job.
When you come home in the evening, you swap your hard hat for a firefighter’s helmet. It’s a commitment to serving the community that combines adrenaline and compassion. Where does this passion come from?
I’ve had this passion since I was 5 years old; my cousin and my great-grandfather were firefighters, too. It was one of their greatest passions. I really love sports and the adrenaline rush; helping people is something I love immensely.
You’re certainly not afraid of anything—how did your first fire go?
It was my first fire as a trainee. The fire chief asked me to handle the water supply so that my colleagues, who had entered the fire, could carry out the “fire attack.” I found myself all alone managing the water supply for the truck and the hoses. It gave me a huge adrenaline rush—it was incredible!
Does your work as a firefighter help you feel more comfortable in your role as a team leader at Equans?
I’m passionate about my job; the atmosphere on the job site is something that’s very important to me—something I learned from the fire department that helps me in my work.
I love everything about team cohesion, team spirit, communicating effectively, and knowing how to organize ourselves as best as possible to complete the project!
