Haribo achieves 80% energy savings by generating hot water at its Marseille plant with Equans.
Eighty percent is the amount of energy Haribo has saved thanks to Equans’ installation of a heat recovery chiller at its production plant in Marseille. This installation addresses the need to optimize energy consumption and prevent waste, at a time when energy efficiency is becoming an imperative.
With a presence in more than 100 countries, Haribo is a global player in the confectionery industry. The brand has more than 16 production sites around the world, including the one in Marseille.
An energy audit conducted at this site in 2019 identified new, untapped opportunities for energy optimization. Based on this, an Energy Performance Contract (EPC) was signed between Haribo and Equans, involving:
- a reduction in gas consumption by the factory’s hot water boiler
- improvements to the distribution of chilled and hot water
- a reduction in pumping energy consumption
- monitoring of gas and electricity consumption

An Innovative Energy Solution with Dual Benefits
Our experts proposed an energy efficiency measure (EEM) based on waste heat recovery. Specifically, the heat discharged during the cooling process is captured and reintroduced into the manufacturing process. Since it was commissioned on January 5, 2021, a new boiler fueled by this waste heat has replaced the gas-fired boiler, which is now only used during scheduled maintenance of the sustainable system.
Significant energy savings
For this project, Equans had initially committed to achieving 60% energy savings. Today, the results achieved far exceed this goal, with an 80% reduction in the boiler’s energy consumption. Consumption was reduced by 1,550 MWh, resulting in a reduction of 600 metric tons of CO₂ emissions.

Eligible for Energy Saving Certificates (CEE) grants, the installation of the cooling unit with heat recovery was covered by Equans.
Energy Savings Certificates (CEE) are a government-sponsored incentive program for energy-efficiency renovations, designed to encourage energy conservation.
