An Eco-Friendly Data Center Serving CERN's Scientific Needs
One petabyte a day: CERN's computing and data storage needs
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the most prestigious scientific laboratories in the world. Based in Geneva and in the Ain region, CERN is dedicated to particle physics, using complex scientific instruments such as the LHC (Large Hadron Collider - Grand collisionneur de hadrons) to manage the enormous amount of data generated by its experiments—approximately one petabyte per day.
Efficiency, Resilience, and Scalability: The Challenges Facing CERN's Future Data Center
To meet the growing needs for computing and data storage required for future scientific advances, CERN has decided to build a new, state-of-the-art data center on its CERN campus in Prévessin, in the Ain department.
This new data center must meet environmental excellence standards; therefore, the challenges are:
Adiabatic Cooling and Heat Recovery: Green Solutions from Equans for CERN
Equans, as the prime contractor, is responsible for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the new data center. Specific solutions implemented include:
