Orano once again turns to electrical engineering experts for the expansion of its uranium enrichment plant in Tricastin
The project manager for this project, Ineo Nucléaire—a subsidiary of Equans France—alongside Actemium Projets Nucléaires France (VINCI Energies), will carry out the general electrical installation as part of the capacity expansion program at the Orano plant.
After it is mined, uranium must be processed and enriched to serve as fuel for nuclear power plants that generate electricity. This enrichment phase is strategic and relies on high-value-added expertise. Inaugurated 10 years ago and located at the Tricastin site (Drôme), Orano’s Georges Besse 2 enrichment plant is the only facility in France dedicated to this process.
To address the challenges of Western energy sovereignty in low-carbon nuclear-based electricity, its production capacity must now be expanded, which requires extending the facility by constructing new buildings adjacent to the existing plant.
The consortium is responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of high- and low-voltage power distribution systems supplying all process and utility subsystems, as well as low-voltage systems (IT, telephony, fire safety, and various alarm systems).
Meeting the specific safety requirements of the nuclear industry
Working in a nuclear environment involves specific requirements and particularly stringent safety constraints, particularly regarding traceability, inspection, and the selection of equipment and materials—such as the 200 km of fire- and impact-resistant cables.
To account for seismic risk, for example, electrical cabinets and control systems are tested in the laboratory on vibration tables to ensure the safety of the facilities. Members of the consortium work in collaboration with partners specializing in this type of equipment qualification.
Since the Georges Besse 2 plant is a Basic Nuclear Facility (INB), operators and technicians are trained and authorized to work in an environment with a high level of safety and security requirements.
