Get ready! In Fontenay-sous-Bois, the Salvador-Allende ice rink is heating the swimming pool lanes
The ice rink at the Salvador-Allende Municipal Sports Complex kicked off 2023 with a new, innovative, and energy-efficient cooling system. The more efficient equipment installed by teams from MCI, a subsidiary of Equans, enables the City of Fontenay-sous-Bois to achieve significant energy savings while reducing its carbon footprint. As an added bonus, the heat generated during ice production is recovered to heat the water in the adjacent swimming pool, further reducing energy consumption.
Established in 1973, the Salvador-Allende Complex ice rink is one of the historic gathering places in the city of Fontenay-sous-Bois. Measuring 58 meters by 27.50 meters and with a capacity of over 1,000 people, the facility hosts numerous classes, sports events, and open sessions for hockey, ice dancing, figure skating, synchronized skating, and speed skating.
In 2020, as part of the facility’s renovation, the city of Fontenay-sous-Bois enlisted MCI’s teams to upgrade its equipment and install a sustainable heat recovery system. Already responsible for the ice rink’s previous facilities, MCI will manage the operation and maintenance of the new infrastructure through 2026.
Launched in April 2021, the work was completed by MCI in the summer of 2022, in time for the ice rink’s opening and return to service at the start of the school year. After nine months of operation, the initial results are conclusive: performance targets—measured in particular by the energy efficiency ratio (EER*)—have been met and even exceeded, with ratios reaching as high as 4.72! The local government has also submitted an application for financial support under the Energy Savings Certificates (CEE) program established by the French government.
