TER modernization at Montigny-lès-Metz: an innovative rail project
A modern rail maintenance and storage facility at Montigny-lès-Metz
In Montigny-lès-Metz, the former rail maintenance center, shut down in 2013 and since dismantled, is to be completely transformed into a modern maintenance and repair facility*.

This major project for the Grand Est region, co-financed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is managed by SNCF Voyageurs and entrusted to the teams of Ineo SCLE Ferroviaire and Ineo UTS, two Equans France entities specialized in rail infrastructures. Spanning 47 hectares, the 14-track site will house the maintenance and cleaning of the 41 Fluo trains operated on the Lorraine corridor: Nancy - Metz - Luxembourg, creating 50 new jobs and underlining Equans France's ability to contribute to the revitalization of the local industrial fabric.
*A modern Maintenance and Storage Facility (SMR) is a railway installation equipped for the servicing, maintenance and safe parking of trains. It uses advanced technologies to optimize train safety, efficiency and availability.
An ultra-modern rail macro-lot focused on innovation and safety
Highlights of the project include :
-
The laying of 9 kilometers of service track, enabling optimized train circulation.
-
The installation of 450 meters of retractable catenaries integrated directly into the building, facilitating maintenance and reinforcing the site's modularity by being able to be lowered or isolated rapidly.
-
Safety is at the heart of the system, with the deployment of "SIL4 assimilated "* signalling (the highest level of railway safety), controlling train movements in the Technicentre.
-
A personal protection system is also in place to guarantee the safety of the teams in charge of work on the trains.
*Assimilated SIL4: The term "assimilated" here means that the computerized geographic maneuvering station (PMGI) is considered or treated as equivalent to a system meeting SIL4 requirements, even if it is not formally certified as such.
Equans France's strong commitment to energy and industrial transition
The project will involve up to 20 employees over a 19-month period.
Progressive commissioning is scheduled for 2026, with the aim of reaching full capacity by the end of 2026.
The project is part of France's national rail network modernization plan, which calls for the renovation or reconstruction of numerous similar sites between now and 2032, with a view to opening up the market to competition.
This project illustrates the technical expertise and capacity for innovation of the teams in the UNIFER consortium (Ineo SCLE Ferroviaire, Fornoni Amédée, EGIS, Equans France), positioning Equans France as a key player in rail infrastructure in France.
