Profile of Nicolas, Field Maintenance Technician at Equans Services Bâtiments & Infrastructures
What do you like about your job these days?
“I’m a field service technician and I work in several areas: plumbing, repairs, boilers, air conditioning… What I like is the variety—no two days are alike. But above all, I love working with people. We represent the company with every service call: we talk to customers, put their minds at ease, and explain things. That human connection makes all the difference. And I’m proud to make a tangible contribution to the energy efficiency of buildings.”
Why did you join Equans France?
“From my very first internship, while I was retraining, I knew this was where I wanted to work. They welcomed me as a colleague: they trusted me and encouraged me to see it through. I felt valued, even though I was just an intern. I also really connected with the team spirit and the managers’ approachability. I signed a permanent contract in September 2022.”
Why did you change careers?
“I wanted a job that was more varied and more technical, one where I could learn something new every day. I decided to change careers at age 40. Through a training program, I learned the trades of heating and plumbing installation, then boiler maintenance and repair. Starting from scratch takes courage, but when you know why you’re doing it, you make quick progress. You’re never too old to make a change!”
What was your previous job?
“I started out in the bakery and pastry business at a very young age: by the time I was 14, I was already an apprentice. I worked in this field for nearly twenty years. What I loved most was training apprentices. But over the years, I needed a fresh start—something that would make me want to get up in the morning again.”
A Tip for Taking the Plunge into a Career Change
“You have to believe in yourself and take a chance. A career change requires stepping out of your comfort zone, but it’s a real opportunity. Our technical fields are diverse and at the heart of today’s climate challenges. Today, I feel fulfilled and proud to be becoming a tutor. Sharing knowledge has always been a driving force for me, and being able to do so in my new career brings me great satisfaction.”
