ATMB is combating carpool fraud with a new camera-and-barrier system
After pioneering the creation of the first binational carpool lane on a highway—complete with a customs checkpoint—on the A411 in Vallard, ATMB is innovating once again with a system—the first of its kind in France—designed to combat carpool fraud, developed by Invision and installed by Ineo Infracom, a subsidiary of Equans France and the consortium’s lead contractor. Now in place for four months, the system has already reduced the fraud rate by 85 percent.
The Thônex-Vallard customs checkpoint on the A411 is one of two entry points into Switzerland via the Autoroute Blanche (A40), used by more than 22,000 vehicles each day.
A quarter of this traffic—5,000 vehicles—occurs between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. as commuters cross the border. To reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, ATMB opened France’s first cross-border carpool lane on a highway five years ago.
Using this 500-meter-long lane saves carpoolers an average of 3 to 5 minutes. This lane has also reduced traffic congestion by 40% in terms of length, duration, and frequency.
This has convinced many of the benefits of carpooling: the number of carpoolers has increased by 2%, rising from 10.8% in 2018 to 12.5% in 2024. This lane is therefore a success.
