Career Path and Calling: An Interview with a Construction Foreman
Interview with Pierre-Paul Stunault, Site Supervisor for Interior Electrical Work
What are the role and responsibilities of an interior construction foreman?
As an indoor substation site manager, my job involves building a new substation—a new facility for distributing electricity. It’s a career rich in interactions and human connections with the team. We’re like an orchestra conductor: we organize the work on-site, and we’re experts not only in electrical energy but also in the art of construction.
It’s a job that requires a high level of commitment and is never routine. For our teams, it’s deeply satisfying to deliver a functional, high-performance building that’s well integrated into its surroundings.
What is the background of this project, and why is the role of a mail carrier so important?
This site had an old, outdated substation. We have incorporated new technologies into this new substation. We are a vital link in the country’s energy distribution network.
What is the difference between an indoor and an outdoor unit?
An indoor substation is the equivalent of an outdoor substation, but located inside a building. We operate within a voltage range of 63 kilovolts to 90 kilovolts. We could compare it to an electrical distribution panel in a home. We distribute power to communities, cities, and the region.
The difference between an indoor substation and an outdoor substation is that the indoor substation integrates much more easily into more urbanized areas.
What excites you about this profession, and what does managing a construction site involve?
"What I like about this project is managing the schedule and the team." There's no such thing as a routine. I’m very proud to do this job—starting a project from scratch and delivering it turnkey to the client really warms my heart.”
Does this profession inspire people to pursue it?
In any case, it’s important to pass on our knowledge and help inspire new careers. My team leader, Giovanni, is currently in training to eventually become a site manager.
We are proud of our profession, proud to be postal workers, and proud to make a real difference!
