Sustainable cheese just tastes better right away
Every year, Compagnie des Fromages & RichesMonts saves 12 GWh in gas consumption at its Montauban-de-Bretagne facility.
Yes, yes, you read that right! 12 GWh
A great savings that’s good for the planet and puts a smile back on the accountant’s face.
These results were achieved after installing a high-temperature heat pump at the Montauban-de-Bretagne production site.
The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring independence from fossil fuels. It’s the magic formula for making better cheese.
Those Bretons are lucky!
My good sir, know this: every flatterer lives at the expense of the one who listens to him.
Owned by CF&R, the famous cheese brands—Cœur de Lion, Rustique, RichesMonts, St André, and Révérend—are sold in more than 70 countries.
Yet another proof that happiness is universal.
CF&R is a company specializing in the production of industrial soft cheeses, including Camembert, Coulommiers, Brie, raclette cheese, and others.
All good things, wouldn’t you agree, Mr. Ducorbeau?
The production of these products requires both a large amount of cold and hot water at over 80°C, primarily to pasteurize the milk.
How can we capitalize on this dual need and avoid wasting energy?
This is the challenge that the experts at Axima Réfrigération took on, resulting in a 20 to 25 percent annual reduction in CF&R’s gas consumption at the Montauban de Bretagne site since 2018. Thank you to the team!
Fewer holes in the Gruyère means more cheese
In 2015, following an energy audit, the company decided to improve its energy efficiency by installing a high-temperature hybrid heat pump:
This is the story of a fridge that's really heating up!
The principle involves recovering heat from refrigeration systems, raising its temperature, and then reusing it in another part of the industrial process. Overall, using a heat pump makes it possible to recover waste heat for industrial processes as well as for district heating networks. It’s an efficient and energy-saving system that embodies the spirit of a lion.
50% reduction in gas consumption projected by 2024
In terms of energy efficiency, CF&R achieves an annual reduction of 20 to 25% in its annual gas consumption at its Montauban de Bretagne site.
The figures also show a savings of 12 GWh, or 2,000 metric tons of CO₂ avoided per year.
- Savings of 20 to 25% on annual gas consumption.
- 2 GWh, or 2,000 metric tons of CO₂ avoided per year.
This is an ambitious but achievable project, as the technology developed by the experts at Axima Réfrigération combines two distinct thermodynamic cycles: compression and absorption. The system uses ammonia as the refrigerant and water as the absorbent. The properties of the water-ammonia mixture allow for the production of hot water up to 120°C at an operating pressure below 25 bar.
If you didn't understand any of that, it's okay—not everyone is an engineer! In that case, just remember the title; the Equans teams will take care of the rest.
