The Performance of Gigafactories: Key to Decarbonizing Mobility
A must-attend event for the entire industry, the Batteries Event trade show is currently taking place in Lyon. It’s an opportunity to delve into a facet of the mobility transition that remains all too little known: the energy consumption of gigafactories and the ways to optimize their efficiency.
We discuss this with Alex Authier, Design Project Manager in the Development Department at Equans.
Why has the performance of gigafactories become such a central topic in public and technological discourse?
Efforts to tackle the climate crisis are gaining momentum, particularly in France and Europe. Decarbonizing transportation has become an absolute necessity. In France, transportation accounts for about 30% of our CO2 emissions. The rise of electric vehicles—both for private use and commercial vehicles—is a reality that is driving the development of gigafactories. Changes in European Union regulations confirm this trajectory with the ban on the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035.
The gigafactories needed to produce electric vehicle batteries are multiplying. Between 2022 and 2030, production capacity in Europe will increase tenfold. To align with the decarbonization goal they are helping to achieve and to gain user acceptance, gigafactories must also be vigilant about their energy performance. This requires a comprehensive approach that integrates both investment costs and operating costs—namely, maintenance and energy consumption—into the design phases.
