CERN’s Future Data Center: A Technical Springboard Toward Energy Excellence
An in-depth look with Philippe Kersalé, Director of Data Centers at Equans
Now that the new data center building has been fully completed and stands as an imposing structure on the Prevessin site, Philippe Kersalé, Director of Data Centers at Equans France, analyzes the progress of this extraordinary project and its positive implications for meeting the challenges of the energy, industrial, and digital transitions.
Why build a new data center at the CERN site in Prevessin?
An international basic research organization based in Geneva on both sides of the
border with France, CERN is one of the largest and most prestigious
scientific laboratories. Dedicated to particle physics, it provides its physicists and
engineers with the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study
the basic building blocks of matter (fundamental particles). Home to numerous
research facilities, CERN notably operates the LHC, the Large Hadron Collider,
a circular accelerator with a circumference of 27 km that collects approximately
one petabyte of data every day.
